Becoming a Team Leader / Ganger

The Role

A Team Leader, often referred to as a Ganger, is responsible for overseeing a small crew of operatives on site and ensuring work is carried out safely, efficiently and to the required standards. While they are still closely involved in the day-to-day work, their role also includes organising tasks, coordinating the team and making sure the job runs smoothly.

Team Leaders act as the link between the workforce and site management. They may liaise with supervisors, project managers or clients, report progress, and ensure the crew has the correct equipment, materials and information to complete the work. Many people move into this role after gaining strong experience as a skilled operative and demonstrating leadership on site.

Qualifications & Tickets

As responsibilities increase, Team Leaders often hold a wider range of qualifications to help manage work safely and effectively.

Typical tickets include:

  • NRSWA Streetworks Supervisor – Required for supervising works on public highways

  • SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme) – Health and safety qualification for site supervisors

  • CPCS or NPORS Excavator Operator – Often needed when managing plant operations on site

  • Confined Space Training – For supervising work in underground chambers or restricted areas

  • EUSR SHEA (Water, Gas or Power) – Utilities safety awareness training

  • Cable Avoidance Training (CAT & Genny) – Ensures underground services can be located safely

  • First Aid at Work – Often required when leading teams on site

Team Leaders usually have several years of industry experience and a strong understanding of how utilities projects operate. From this role, workers may progress further into positions such as Supervisor, Site Manager or Project Manager depending on their career path.
