Becoming a Skilled Utilities Operative
The Role
A skilled utilities operative is an experienced worker who has developed the knowledge, qualifications and site experience needed to carry out more technical tasks on utilities projects. While general operatives support the team, skilled operatives are often trusted with greater responsibility such as operating machinery, installing infrastructure or overseeing specific parts of the job.
Skilled operatives typically have several years of experience working on utilities sites and will have gained additional tickets and specialist training along the way. They often act as key members of the crew and may support supervisors or team leaders in keeping work progressing safely and efficiently.
Many workers move into this role after starting as a utilities operative and building experience within the industry.
Qualifications & Tickets
As operatives progress in their careers, they often gain additional qualifications that allow them to take on more responsibility on site.
Typical tickets include:
NRSWA Streetworks
CPCS or NPORS Excavator Operator – For operating plant machinery on utilities projects
CPCS or NPORS Dumper / Roller – Often required on larger infrastructure works
Confined Space Training – Required for work in chambers, sewers or underground infrastructure
EUSR SHEA (Water, Gas or Power depending on sector) – Safety training for utilities environments
Cable Avoidance Training (CAT & Genny) – For safely locating underground services
First Aid at Work – Often required for more senior site operatives
These additional tickets allow skilled operatives to carry out more specialised work and increase their value on site, which often leads to higher day rates and opportunities to progress into roles such as team leader, supervisor or ganger.
